Need help identifying civil war lock

A friend of mine bought this lock at a reputable civil war relic shop for $110 and was told it was an ammunition box lock. We havent found anthing on the internet about locking ammo boxes in the civil war. It has the letters "US" on the brass cover plate. Any info on this would be highly appreciated!

I don't know if its an ammo box lock or not but check out the following website: cw1861.com, they have very similiar locks used in the C.W., they sell for 30-35 dollars. HH Bob.B
