Just found this in the ground in an area right along the Etowah river in Bartow county... It looks hand chiseled all the way around the sharp edge and is somewhat translucent. Prettier than the picture shows, but hopefully one of you will know what it is. Is it a thumbscraper? Thanks in advance!

Not sure but it looks kind of like piece of flint for a flintlock rifle.

That's what I thought as soon as I saw it mcb66. That's a very nice find ASE! If it's not a piece of gunflint then it may be a knapping flake and there will be more in that area. Good luck!

It is a reduction flake shaped like a gun flint but it is not a gun flint. The secondary edge work was also probably done by nature or maybe river tumble. Good new it was made by man it is just what was left over. That area has many artifacts and sites.

Thanks for the explanation Tnmountains! I'll be keeping my eyes peeled around that area for sure now.

You have a nice little flake knife there, a very common use for a nice sharp flake.... There is to much edge work for it to be incidental IMHO.
