Need Help, Is it a Coin - Medal - or something else

Got out early today to hit a spot before the rain hit Maryland from Irene. The metal is pretty thin and I can see some writing. It looks foreign to me. We have found coins from 1798 to 1830 in this spot. Also found an old British medal there also. Any help would be appreciated.

I cant make it out. Just seems foreign to me. I wanted to see if anyone may know what it could be before trying to clean it up more.
