Hunted a home in Virginia dating to the late 1700s. The owner's family have lived there since 1830, and there was a Confederate surgeon officer who lived there and is buried on site. I found a Southern Cross of Honor that belonged to him. See "Today's Finds"
I found this eagle pin thing right next to their front porch at about five inches. I had previously found an 1817 large cent about three feet away at four inches. The eagle's head and wing tips are bent backwards. When I was cleaning the dirt off of the back, I saw a large crack that eventually led to a headless eagle.
Notice the loop of metal on the side and the three shanks on the back. There is one shank on the back of the eagle's head.
What the heck is this thing?
