I found a large two piece button today and its backmarked "Waldron Carroll NY"

Its in amazing condition with all gilt still in place, its just plain though. I cant find any reference online to the back mark or in Tice's book...

You said you can't find its backmark in Tice's book, so I didn't look there. It also is not listed in the McGuinn-&-Bazelon book on button backmarks. I can't find any meantion of "Waldron Carroll" anywhere on the internet. Because your button is not a Military type, apparently the Waldron Carroll firm was a small-time Civilian clothing-manufacturer or store, and wasn't in business for very many years.

The backmark's "plain-block-without-serifs" lettering style very strongly indicates your button was manufactured in either the latter 1800s or the 20th-century.

Thanks! That makes sense, I found one mention of Waldron and Carroll on google and it was for a button that held a watch strap...and it was in the early 1900s so that makes sense...

If you google "Waldron & Carroll" you get a few hits. I found them listed in the NYC Directories from about 1903 - 1920. There are references to them being connected with saddlery or harness manufacturing. Also - interestingly some references in the 1921 West Point Yearbook where it appears they are advertising they produce items for Military Academies.

Thank you, Bramblefind and Mustang8780. I've been using ask.com for websearching. I've got good reasons to dislike google's policies ..but, looks like I'll have to use it on the few occasions when ask.com produces zero hits.

I'll try to get word to Bruce Bazelon about the Waldron Carroll backmark, for inclussion in the next edition of the backmark-book.
