The front looks like an antique pocket sundial. The back looks like some type of latch, but I'm thinking it's a sundial or calendar. Your first pic is upside down; did you see the phoenix? He has somewhat of Griffin segreant or phoenix segreant look.

Yes, that's exactly what it is, and I knew that, but I couldn't bring up that brain cell last night. Way to Taz on the ID, and thanks for helping me remember. Breezie
