Need help with button design and age! Benedict & Burnham button

Back reads Benedict & Burnham Extra

According to one website I checked, it could be from between 1834 and 1843?

Any idea what the design symbolizes? It looks like something at the top and it's surrounded by a couple of big leafs...

Thanks for any help!

Re: Need help with button design and age! Benedict & Burnham button

The design is the Irish Thistle. Benedict & Burnham is the old Waterbury company http://www.waterburybutton.com/cart/pc/viewContent.asp?idpage=1

Benedict & Burnham operated 1834 to 1843, this is predecessor of Waterbury Button Co. Buttons of this period are noted for very high quality and they produced a lot of Civilian buttonshttp://www.relicman.com/buttons/zBackmarkBenedictBurnham.htm

I cant find an exact match but Im leaning toward civilian or hotel uniform. http://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/early-gilt-button-thistle-design-res-69957992

Of Irish and Scottish (amongst others) descent, I've always known the thistle as Scottish :icon_scratch:

Thanks for correcting me.. It sounds like a match to the extra gilt button on Worthpoint but no picture. My guess is a large beautiful old Benedict & Burnham Waterbury civilian button.

similar to a "charleston light infantry button" Charleston military unit with Scottish heritage
