I found this it at a housesite that I have been hunting for a while.
The only thing I can make out on it appears to say:

C.C. ? ? ? N H A R D T
BALT ? Md.

PATENTED
OCT. 7. 1856

The first "C" could possibly be a "G"

It is approximately 2 inches tall X 1 1/4" wide and sits about 3/8" high.

The "knob" on top has an opening all the way thru it and probably opened to the inside of the "top". As you can see there is also some type of string still attached to it.

Any Ideas on the actual company name, the age of the item, or its use??

P1010003a.webp

P1010007a.webp

P1010006a.webp

Thanks

Re: Need help with housesite item

Yours was made by Charles C. Reinhardt and yours would be somewhere between about 1856-1870's at most because patents were only good for about 10-15 years. Nice find.

WOW - That's pretty interesting. And I thought it was the top to some type of powder container or something!!!! ???
I found it at a housesite that I have been hunting pretty good for over a year now. I was hunting around the outer reaches of the yard and was on my way back into the front yard to dig some questionable signals as I knew I had gotten all of the good ones. As I was making my way over there, I hit this "banging " signal. I said someone had to have recently dropped something as I knew I had hunted the area well. Of course I was surprised when this thing rolled out. Goes to show that an area is NEVER hunted out, regardless of how hard I thought I had hunted it.

Thanks for the info. I think I will print your "article" out and add it with the item.

Thanks again.

Thinking about it, you can call it a Civil War era relic.
