Today I found a Geo. (George) H. Rogers Pool Hall Bentley, IA Good for 5c in trade token. Bentley is nearly a ghost town in Pottawattamie County with few residents and available history is limited. Any help with history of the pool hall or George Rogers would be appreciated. Thanks, JJ

George Hiram Rogers was born Jul 30, 1884 to Herbert and Charlotte Rogers and spent his early years on the family farm. He married in about 1908 and by 1910 George and Elise had their first child. At that time George was working as a drayman for a general store - hauling goods for them. When he registered for the draft in WWI, he indicated that he was employed as a section man for the Chicago Great Western Railroad. In 1920, George and Elsie had added two more sons to their family, George's mother had died, and his father had moved in with the family. George stated he was a laborer. A daughter was added to the family in 1921. Between 1920 and 1930, the family moved to Howell County, MO and George was a laborer building bridges.

Unfortunately, none of this gives any indication about the token. To determine what business he was in and when it operated, one must look through business directories for Bentley, and they are somewhat difficult to locate. One could presume, based on the appearance of the token, that he had a cigar or confectionery store, or perhaps a pool hall for a while. My guess would be that it was either 1910-1915 or in the mid-1920s, but that is only a guess.

If you'd like, PM me and I will put you in touch with the IA trade token cataloguer who is researching tokens from IA.
