I dug this in a pasture in SC. I think it may be to a saddle like a saddle decoration but I don't know.

not trying to disagree with you guys , but would a pastry cutter have decorations on the wheel like this one ?
I can see it being a pastry cutting wheel ,, but have never seen one like this is all,, could you post a picture of 1 with designs on the wheel ?

I thought rowel at first glance but after studying it I don't think it is. It looks to be very thin. It is also concave/convex. What is it made of? It could be part of a spur. Maybe the piece that holds the strap to the yoke. I know I am rambling but I am just throwing out ideas. Hope they help.

Well yes they can....but I'm starting to think it might not be a Pastry cutter, as the teeth look rather big on the one posted...so maybe not, I'll let the Poster decide.

I think it is a pastry cutter and what looks decorative is functional to help prevent the dough from sticking.

I believe maybe brass? I really don't know it rang up really high like a brass/pewter/lead/silver signal.

In the third photo, on the left side, is that a bit of blue paint peeking through? If so I'm inclined to think its part of an old toy.

Cleaned up and it's extremely shiny. It was shiny when it came out of the ground could it be silver? Every part is shiny except for the back round thing it's black. Anymore ideas?

It's a concho, and it is the right size, design, and shape like those found on vintage toy cap gun holsters from the 1950's. Most of those were thinner than the conchos we see today used on Western leather gear, belts, clothing, etc. The one below has been painted and has a star design, but is basically the same.

Neat find :) Breezie
