I found this item many years ago at my grandfathers home (built 1855).
Surprisingly few relics at the site, Grandpa and his predecessors kept their pockets sewn up good :)
I have tried looking for images of badges and medals, but so far nothing seems close.
The badge is triandle shaped with two pins on the back.
A small metal square looks like it may have held something below.
It measures about seven-eighths inch on a side.
Thanks for any help!

Hi Scott, My first impression of your medal is it was awarded for penmanship or writing ability, based on the antique fountain pen on the front. You are correct on the lower loop on the bottom, it probably had a "year" bar or ribbon hanging off of it. Happy Hunting, Sub 8-)

I don't think it is a fountain pen.

I think it is a needle. It represents "pinked" fabric, a hand sewn seam around the edge, and a needle in the middle. Sewing award from a home economics class... Cool.

That makes sense, DCMatt, with the "clutch pin" back, not too old then (1930's-modern?) Sub 8-)
