Pascin in NYC
Pascin was very active in an artists organization existing
from 1917 through at least 1919 called The Penguin. This
was pulled together by Walt Kuhn and included most of the
younger modernist artists not affiliated with Steiglitz. I have
aPascin print of a Penguin dinner that is fabulous and the
Archives of American Art has another. Pascin exhibited with
the group as well as being part of an inner circle that
organized costume balls and themed dinners and concerts
that were highly Bohemian. I am writing an article on the
Penguin that will appear in 2011 in the Archives of American
Art Journal.

I've also recently acquired a similar item - 8x10" oil on wood
of wintry (apparently European) landscape, signed "J.
Pascin". A pencil notation on the auction sticker on the rear
implies it had been sold in1974 for $40. The signature is
different than the usual Pascin signatures on his
watercolors, drawings and graphics, as the lettering is
printed (vs script) and the initial "J." is included. Iassume
this may be attributable to the difficulty of writing in script
using oils. As Pascin was not terribly collectible until
relatively recently, I cannot see why anyone would have gone
around faking his work, especially with such an
uncharacteristic subject and medium. Would appreciate any
information or advice.

Ihave small oil painting on wood siigned J. Pascin. I noticed
the postings from a Janice Jackson. Would like to compare
signatures of the artist and discuss. Any other info that
might help us both.

Jules Pascin in America
Ihave acouple of landscapes by the artist, but find research
difficult as the catalogue raisonne was composed mostly in
France. It is a four edition work, but there has never been a
significant amount of scholarship dedicated to his American
works. Souther sources like the Telfair Museum have said he
was in the Savannah area on and off from 1914 to 1917, but
it really is detective work to uncover more information on his
American phase. The archives of American art has his
paperwork from Edith Halpert's Downtown Gallery available
on-line. Read that and you know a heck of alot about the
J. Pascin
Ialso have a painting of a J. Pascin signed in the left corner.
It's landscape with a few people walking done the road. 6" by
8". Appears to be in his style, could this aslo be a "pay the
rent" painting?

Jules Pascin
Ihave asmall oil on board of what is a very pastoral scene
but it is signed J. Pascin and the old lady that gave it to me
prior to her death owned many fine pieces of art. She
traveled extensively and collected art and antiques. I am
sure believed it to be his signature. However, it is not his
usual genre'. This I thought might be a "pay the rent" piece
done early own.
Does anyone know if he ever did landscape scenes?
Iwould appreciate any information on what seems to be a
very unique question about this man.
