All Treasure Hunting
Hello everyone,.....I just received permission to hunt on a late 1700 early 1800 hundred farm house. I'm sure there have been many changes to the terrain surrounding this house, including a swimming pool and a garage. The owner has told me he has found many square nails around the foundation and in his garden. My question is, how I approach hunting here? I'm new to this game and I want to do this the right way. I'm using a prism V, and need tips from all you seasoned veterans out there. I know there has to be some goodies. I will probably not be hunting on his lawn until I hone my digging techniques, but that still leaves a good half acre or more of open land. Are there particular areas around the house I should search first? Were these old houses similarly laid out? Lots of stone walls. Not much poison ivy, which makes me hot. Thanx PFP

Wow Tchimes you just about covered it all, good advice. Onlything I can add is to work in small areas i.e. 10x10 squares and work them by gridding(detect south to north then east to west) that way you cover alll most all the area and don't miss much. Also make sure you overlap your swiings to insure complete coverage of ground.
Good luck and keep us posted, Ray

read the beekrock threads, as they have every hidey hole covered i think.....g

another good place is around the well, and on the path from the house to the well

if the well isn't there anymore, the owner may know where it used to be

sounds like an awesome site, good luck!

youve gotten some great advice. the only things i can add are go slow. if you think you are just crawling along, you are going too fast! a snails pace is just fine. also, dig everything. even those iffy, not so solid targets. the stuff you are after is likely to be deep, and most machines will give faint iffy signals on deep targets. also, dig mid tones. even if a coin typicly is a high tone on your machine, if it is real deep it may ding as a mid tone. good luck and be patient. you are going to dig a ton of junk! just remember that every bit of tin or iron you remove opens up a window underneath it. there could be some coins hiding underneath all of that stuff.

Thanx, you guys have been really helpful, maybe some day, when I get better at this, I'll be able to pass on great info to fellow addicts. Oh, by the way when i got my detector I set three goals. A merc dime, a buff nickle, and an indian head penny. I scored my first IH today. In poor condition with a date of 1887, or 1882. Needless to say that was pretty cool. Some day I'll learn to use my digital camera. Is it possible to make a living from MDing . PFP

i would stay away from any grass,, until you know how ,,and are very good at cutting a plug and leaving no evidence you were there,, all it takes is one messy hole amd you may get the boot.. this place sounds awesome,, so i would practice in my own yard on you're plugs

I wouldn't plan on making a living with a metal detector.I would check the rock walls (fence) also, more than once i've read of a small cache or similar being hidden in rock walls.I believe everything else has been covered.Ask the owner if he is familiar with where they used to dump the garbage in years past.Lots of good stuff found in old dumps. Is this a southern farmhouse?

It's in connecticut.

Oh yeah, definitely check out the garden.Remember, when searching an area with history such as this, dig all signals. Then sweep over same area again, check for more signals.

My suggestion is to let me hunt it instead.....hahahahahahah jk
Good luck, post your finds

Also always pack out the trash you dig up, people like to see your cleaning the property, and not just getting rich lol

good luck
