Hey everyone! Could someone please help me identify this red stone that's set into this rock. It has some black veins running in it, my first thought was maybe red jasper??Also please call out anything else that stands out.. Found it in my yard in New Jersey while digging.
Thanks,
Kristen

I think it's microcrystalline quartz. Is it jasper? Not sure. It is red and I do believe it's microcrystalline quartz, but to tell if its jasper you need to have it cut. You need a fresh surface to tell what color the rock is on the inside. Just because its one color on the outside doesn't mean isn't the same in the inside. This is due to weathering conditions that the rock in counters.

I was born and raised in NJ, what general area did you find it?

Have you been to the geology museum in Franklin? They could help you identify it. I'll look up their info and post it in a sec.
