Yep, school is out for the summer, and yet again this summer, our neighborhood is having problems. In the last two weeks, 3 cars has been broken into on my street alone, and there are only 3 houses on my street. 2 this Saturday, and 1 the week before. My vehicles have been o.k., but I'll talk to both of my neighbors tomorrow to get some more information. Also, I noticed that the streetlight is out. Perhaps a BB-gun? I'll investigate tomorrow and report back.
If anyone can remember, I had a problem with 'doorbell ditchers' last year when school was out. But, I also had my trucks contents scattered on my driveway the next morning after witnessing a couple of teens the previous night hanging 'out late' on my street. I can only draw conclusions, especially when I pulled my car over a couple of blocks down the road, over a few years earlier, and confronting the same teen for steeling solar powered yard lights from someones house. This 'teen' was spending the night at the house two houses away with friends before my trucks contents were spilled. There are only a very few (probably 2) teens that live in my neighborhood. The other kids are in middle school and do the 'doorbell ditching' thing. But, I know who everyone is. I have my targets, albeit just assumptions at this point.

I have the 'automatic doorbell' proximity alarm on my front door and it's great for letting me know when UPS is walking up the sidewalk, but if I point it at the street, it'll go off at every car going buy. I was thinking of some kind of break beam alarm, for when they walk up my driveway, or something like that. I just don't know. I need some outside ideas. After I make it, I'll give it to my neighbors in hopes that we'll catch the little scums, drag them into the creek and ___________ (or at least call the cops via citizens arrest). There is no excuse for breaking into cars. Kids or not! O.k., maybe, if they are really young, and you can go the the dad and tell him what they've been doing. But older kids need to know better.

For anyone that's interested, my GF was leaving today and was approached by my neighbor and told her about two 'residential' break in's off my street. That's was got my interested to look online at the local crime states from the police department. I don't see any residential break in's in the report, but did see the 'vehicle' break ins. I'll talk to him tomorrow too. My 'hood' is a very quiet neighborhood where there is NO crime. I suspect that it's just the kids breaking into vehicles looks for anything of value. A 'real' crook would hit bigger targets. My opinion anyway.

Yes, always drama.

That's the good side of them. But, there is also a bad side. I don't think the old man next to me, nor the older friend across from him is suspect of breaking into vehicles. In fact, I find my whole neighborhood is a lot of high priced houses that would only be owned by respectable people. Very respectable people that would'nt even need to break into peoples cars. However, they have teenagers. And like dogs, teens need 'activity' in their life to keep them happy. I too was a troubled teen. I remember breaking into cars myself... and you know what? I should have gotten a good a$$ wippin too. Don't think I'm just an evil person lurking to find a teen to point the finger at. That's why I'm 'assuming' at this point.... it's called an 'educated guess'. I'm not prejudiced and I whole hardily believe in listening to both sides of any story, but I'm guessing that when we catch the thieves, that we'll find teenagers in the neighborhood. and again, it's just an educated guess. What do you think the odds are that I'm right?

If you have a good teen son/daughter, that's good. I'm not saying all teens are bad. I'm saying that when a small amount of teens (10%) get bored, they need something to get into. I was that teen.

You made me think of something I haven't for years..... the night we "broke" into a car. :laughing9: I have no idea how old I was, maybe 14, and it was definitely much more a case of being bored than being thieves. It might even have been a crime of opportunity because we walked by a car and seen a big dark bag in the back, and the ideas went crazy what could be in there. So the curiousity getting the best of us we tried the door and it was open, and grabbed the bag and took off. About a block away was a park, and it was there we were going to check out our haul hoping for dozens of cassette tapes, or who knows what else. Much to our dissapointment it was a doctor's bag completely loaded with his tools of the trade, and had obviously been left how it was in case he had to leave in a hurry. (Here many doctors are on call for emergencies) Anyway, I was stupid enough to grab the bag, but not so stupid to not put it back, and that's exacty what we did..... of course after listening to our heartbeats for a while. :laughing9: That's pushing 25 years ago and I think back then most break-ins were probably just stupid kids like me looking for something to do. These days I think similar kids probably play video games or amuse themselves on the computer, and it's the drug addicts and serious criminals that are doing the stealing. Another thought I just had is we used to run from the police for fun even when we didn't do anything. There wasn't much fear in being caught because we were all very athletic and could probably run at a good pace for an hour straight.... especially if someone was chasing us! ;D Damn I'd love to be in that kind of condition again.

Hello mikeofaustin,

You might want to consider a wireless video set-up with low light/no light capability or in conjunction with motion lights, both inexpensive and readily available. While the video cameras will not prevent vandals, it will provide video evidence to the police and the D.A. for later prosecution should that be necessary and will also provide a secondary or even third (unbiased) witness if you should need to confront an intruder.
A small quality digital voice recorder hidden within the vehicle with a small external mic and placed on voice activate can also serve to capture the conversation taking place should a break-in happen, in addition to audio on your video set-up.
Usually the parents are held accountable for vandalism carried out by their minor children so video helps seal your case up if you find yourself needing to file a lawsuit in court for damages. Just some ideas, your mileage may vary and I’m not an attorney. ;D

Good luck,
Bear

Just be careful you don't catch the previous poster by mistake.

Hey now, I said I was not an attorney. :laughing7:

LOL... sorry but I just don't have much room in my heart for parents that let their children run amuck and damage other peoples property. Good manners begin in home and folks should be able to trust the things the work so hard for stay in the condition they keep them in. Whatever happened to children and chores? Keep them tired and learning respect and they have little time on their hands to cause trouble...heck around here it is nothing to see a rather young kid wanting to drive a tractor for the summer...they enjoy it....they actively ask if there is anything you need done around the place. One of these well mannered and hard working kids helped me put up sheet rock and did a heck of a job helping me once I showed him how the pattern for the screws needed to look and how deep they needed to be. We were able to finish the whole house and these were 10 foot sheets. Kids are starving for guidance, teach them how to be the men and women of tomorrow...not some little hoodlum.

You and I are on the same page for sure. My wife and I went through a few years ago what mikeofaustin is going through now, and it can be a huge distraction and have a significant impact on one’s day-to-day life. I’m astonished at the things kids are allowed to do these days with no supervision, seems the parents just let them run amuck and act surprised when the police show up with their child in tow. Things sure aren’t like they were when I was a kid, and that’s a shame.

You could post a sign or two suggesting that the area around your place is under video surveillance; whether it is or not they wouldn't know and it may deter them. I certainly don't agree that I should spread my property around so it can't all get stolen from the same "basket". A thief is a thief no matter the age. If they break into your car, even if there isn't anything to steal, you now have to repair a window or doorlock out of pocket or pay insurance deductible. Heck, amputees, paraplegics, quadriplegics and even blind people have climbed Everest. Paraplegics have also sailed around the world. Just because a blind guy makes it to Everest's summit doesn't mean the rest of the blind people can break into my car. :D

When I hear noises on our property that don't sound like the normal bear, fox, etc, I like to take out my inexpensive 24" laser level. Holding it like a rifle, I'll scan the yard & drive (sometimes with a small mag-lite on the end). Most kids are not willing to risk what looks like a laser targeting system, especially when that red dot sweeps across their t-shirt. ;D

You need a large growling dog. Or at least the sound of one. Growling and low snarling (but not barking, that's too easy to figure out it's fake.) Triggered by a motion sensor. And coming from a darker hard-to-see-into area of the yard. Imagination will take care of the rest.... ;D

You can get some small signs made about 5X7 in size that I had made and put it at every door, window and garage door right on or right at chest or eye level of every enterable point.

"DEADLY FORCE IS AUTHORIZED BEYOND THIS POINT"

Grant it can't do anything about break ins on vehicles, but it makes a bugler/thief think twice about breaking into your home. Especially if they do or don't know if someone is home!

Video cameras and car alarms are the only other vehicle deterrent, unless you bait the vehicle and sit with the window in a room partially open and sit and take a pop shot at them after they get into your car.

Here in Texas you can use whatever deadly force to protect yours or ones property, (as long as you know the owners property) and as long as it is after dark.

I had an incident the day prior I was leaving for a motorcycle rally I had a generator in the back of my pick-up that someone tried stealing, but they found I had it chained to the bed of the truck and they would have problems taking it out. I called the police and they came out and fingerprinted the generator and of course said nothing except reminded me if I saw someone trying to steal it again that I could use deadly force as long as it was after dark and then call them. The officer also told me that there were several thefts of some local businesses just a few blocks away where small equipment, generators, air compressors, etc were being stolen and they never caught the thieves.

So when I got back in town, I figured they would come back and try again, so this time I unchained the generator, put the generator in the middle of my truck bed and I even went so far and left the tailgate down for them.

Between my house and my neighbors it is pitch freaken black and you can't see crap from the road, (about 30ft), I waited everynight all through the night from midnight till 6am for 4 days with my 9mm and just sat in the dark and waited. My neighbor came out one time about 1230am and came around to throw trash away in his trash can on the side of the house and it scared the crap out of him while I was sitting in my chair between the houses. I saw him come around from the front of the house with a bag of trash and I said hello. He freaked out as he didn't know who I was sitting in the dark, until I had said something so he knew my voice, then he asked what I was doing, then I told him about the situation and that I was going to wait until whomever put their hands on my generator, started moving it to steal it and let them see what it feels like to be shot.

Of course my luck had it, the thieves never came back! :'( :'(

Since then my neighbor lets me know when he or his family will be out of town and for me to keep an eye on his house. He said he definitely feels protected with me living next door.

Just be careful how you handle it. A few years back a neighbor of mine was totally fed up with his car being broke into after the 3 rd time it became a vendetta and he waited with a Louisville slugger just holding the guy at bay (not using it) got him arrested.. next time wear a ski mask and use it. I used NITRIC acid once on a pickup truck that was the scourge of the neighborhood, all that happened was the doors fell off.(oops.)

thanks for some ideas. I think I'll make a 'break beam' laser that activates a camera upon someone breaking the beam. This is because the 'sensors' that are already out there, go off on pretty much everything that passes by. But, if someone breaks the beam, a camera will record/ or... an alarm will go off (between the hours of ...,...). So far, it will need two mirrors that are precisely aligned, a sender and a receiver... Still working on the idea though.

Camera schmamera... My brother in law has cameras all over his businesses. They have been broken into several times and some great video captured over the years. Not one single conviction. Useless except insurance requires them. Might work if it is just a neighborhood kid you recognize.... Anyway when I lived n Austin I set up 2 different kinds of home security systems on the cheap. One was just a motion light set up by the driveway, but I ran the wires to a light inside my bedroom. Any motion and I would be woken up with a bright light, but the perps would have no clue. Worked great. The other had to do with 220v wires and motorcycle grips.... complete the circuit... Good luck!

Sounds like you could modify a garage door opener's laser setup. I still prefer an alarm that notifies ME rather than video...

Electro Shock Therapy...... :headbang:...Do some recon, bait em in with a trap and subdue the scoundrels.
