I think the "U" stands for Union Metallic Cartridge Company...

The indented letter "U" headstamp on cartridges manufactured by the Union Metallic Cartridge Company dates from the 1880s to the present. Your U-headstamp pinfire cartridge most likely was made sometime between the 1880s and the very early 1900s.

That moves it up to a LeMat Army. The favored pistol of Generals Beauregard and J.E.B Stewart.

But, of course, not with the 'U" headstamp. ;-)
