I think the "U" stands for Union Metallic Cartridge Company...

Wild. That is indeed a Union Metallic Cartride Co pinfire. Likely 9mm. THAT is what fed the famous LeMat (Navy) Revolver.

The indented letter "U" headstamp on cartridges manufactured by the Union Metallic Cartridge Company dates from the 1880s to the present. Your U-headstamp pinfire cartridge most likely was made sometime between the 1880s and the very early 1900s.
