I am in need of a computer data base (not necessarily free) that can be used in a professional environment, can be edited to meet local needs, and can create reports based on data queries.

It would primarily be used to track any number of events - up to 200 (initial, monthly, annual events) for about 2,000 individual people.

My current database (an archaic microsoft driven product built by a guy who's long gone) is fading fast and I need to manage large amounts of non-technical data.

I would like to query, create simple reports/graphs, and do simple projections (for upcoming dates and events... for example: John Johnson is due to complete X training in one month). I would also like to edit the demographics for personnel identified in the system as requirements change (name, birthday, social security number, and about 10 more fields). I would prefer multiple users at one time.

I am open to free and low budget products that can be installed and run immedietly - but am also willing to pay big for a product that is either off-the-shelf or available through a vendor.

Any professional opinions?

You mention that you would like multiple users at one time. Do you want to host this on the web (intranet/Internet), or across a network using a client? The answer will, to some extent, dictate your choices.

Totally a non-professional opinion, no experience with this use on this scale or pupose. Maybe .. OpenOffice.org..... I have full Office 2000, OO.org claims to be the same and similar, BUTTTT, read the bug and app. reports.
As I said, I don't use my Off.2000 for anything like this. Seems like it's a powerpoint linked to an excel type program or some such thing, maybe Marc or Jeff could help. Sorrry if I've wasted your time, jim

Some of us, um . . . old guys . . . may be familiar with what you have and know how to update and improve your database if you tell us which proggy it is.
