found this thing in a city lot, some type of relic that I believe was a topper for something like a wood burning stove. The item is between the shell and the state insurance sign...thanks for the help. Ill post all the pics of what I found that day. Looks like you had an exciting day swinging the old detector. I think your item in question is a fence finial.

Or maybe a lamp finial?
Does it screw in to something on the bottom?

I was thinking lamp finial too... Art Deco style, probably 1920's or early 30's. Same date for your Indianapolis Auto insurance badge.

Agreed, if it's brass. If it's cast iron, probably fence.

It seems to be cast and non magnetic, thanks for the lesson never herd of a finial until now...cool Sorry for the miss information it now seems to be brass and it does have threads on the inside of a hole on the bottom.

Could also be a finial off of an old ornate wood stove topper.

Yes it is threaded on the inside, I thought at first it was cast but after doing some cleaning I can see some brass color.

It can still be cast....it's just cast brass. Since it's threaded, I vote for lamp finial but it could also be a handle for a fire place tool.
