I was dead set on purchasing a new FTP 11" DD coil (w/push on connector) for my early model RS Discovery 3300. I understand the DD "might" get a bit more depth, but I'm really after the coverage. I already have the 4", 8", and 10" factory concentric coils.

I saw the Nel coils and was wondering about the Storm and Tornado models. They should get better coverage and depth since the minor axis is greater than 10", but I was concerned about the 3300's target ID system working as accurately with the Nel coils as it does with the factory coils. Also, coil size only plays one part of the depth equation. The detector only has a certain amount of transmitting power available to charge the search coil. If the detector can't supply adequate power required to charge the search coil fully, will depth suffer? In simpler terms, can a coil be so big that the detector can't fully power it to the point that depth begins to suffer? After all (VERY generally speaking), the size of magnetic fields are largely determined by the amount of wire in the coil windings and the amount of electrical power supplied to that coil.

Have any of you used either the factory 11" DD coil or the larger Nel coils? How was the target I'D accuracy? Thanks for any insight you can provide.

I think the factory 11" DD is the safe bet, but the Nel may be a better choice if the target ID remains accurate. I'm curious to see what your experiences are. BBJ

The 11" DD is not going to be much deeper than the 10" concentric. The NEL Tornado may get a bit more depth, but at a cost of masking as well as not IDing closer items. The Tornado is good for fields where targets are further apart. Not much of a park hunter. The 11" DD does a better job of covering more area with less masking. The max I personally would go is the NEL Hunter (12.5"). Most say they are accurate as well as good depth (1-2" more than your 10"). The biggest complaint I've heard is that they tend to make a detector slightly bottom heavy, something the 11" DD is less prone to do. Getting a plug in NEL isn't easy. I've only found them available by ordering from NEL Ukraine that sells at MSRP and $25 shipping.

Just ordered the factory 11" DD coil with the push-in connector for my Discovery 3300. Also got the coil scuff cover, 3 extra lower rods so I can leave all of my coils pre-rigged.

The 11' DD coil, cover, and lower rods came in today. With the break in the heat in Mississippi this weekend it'll be a good time to try everything out.

Let us know what you think.
