Found this down by the creek after a heavy rain a couple of weeks ago. Germantown, Maryland. I didn't post it right away because I figured it had to be modern, maybe made by a homeless guy or something. But I pulled it out again today and thought I'd get some opinions. Any textile experts here? I've got a USB microscope somewhere in the house, and I'll post some closeups if I can find it. Thanks for any feedback.

I am not an expert but it looks like cotton? Be really cool if ancient and survived!

I thought that same as Joshua when I first saw it. That material wouldn't last long in the elements in Maryland.

That is a modern weave in the wrapping and in the elements I don't think it would last over 75 yrs at the most JMO. Cool find

Weave is way to tight and consistent to be to old. Looks like modern clothesline rope in the one pic. And I had the same thoughts as grim and Joshua about the one image.

Come on you guys got to know its a joke.

The way it is rolling up on the sides reminds me of cut sock or tshirt material.

Yeah thats what I was thinking, like if you tear fabric it'll roll up on the edge. The first thing I thought was that it was from a pair of nylons, but now I'm guessing its cotton. Sure gave me a thrill for about a second.

I'm guessing it was some poor guy's attempt at crab fishing

Grooved weight showing cordage imprint.
