My son did a bit of a walk after work yesterday, hoping to find an arrowhead or two, well, no luck in that department but he did get to see and photograph the endangered Northern Pine snake that is found in the Jersey Pine Barrens. I did not ask him but from the photo it looks about 5 feet long. I believe they go up to 68 inches.

I know I have not seen one in over half dozen years, they are housing development stoppers(State of NJ Endangered Species) :) , shame there are not more of them around.

I know if it were ME out there that I would MUCH prefer to see an arrowhead! Amazing shot though!

Love the pic Don > is this rascal poisonous ? This is one reason I have stayed in and painted instead of hunting !! I have seen to many already this year ;)

The snake is non-poisonous, a constrictor type snake. I believe it is a cousin to the Bull Snake, which is out West.

They are probably mistaken for a rattle snake and like the Fat Broad in the comic strip B.C. they are beaten to a pulp on sight! They look a lot like the bull snake we see around here but the bull snake is darker colored and you can barely see the pattern. They are not listed a being poisonous. Monty

I really don't "care" for snakes, but since my brother in-law is so deathly, ridiculously, terrified, my fear has dissapated. I have seen more snakes this year than I have in the past 5 combined, and it's still early. Oh by the way when Dan set this one on the ground and it slithered toowards "me" I did high tail it out of there.

Don, that one is huge, if it was in my yard.......I'd give it plenty of space.

CG they are calling for a snakey year around NC . I am seeing to many and yes it is early yet !! I prefere my folk art painted walking stick snakes to the live ones ::) LOL

Great! Leave it to us to build all those rock walls and make plenty of homes for them ::). Gives a whole new meaning to keep your eyes on the ground!

Great photo Don....wish I had a few around my place to keep the varmits away. Usually see one or two black snakes a year in the yard but none so far this year.

Hey folks....can you believe Country Girl (who claims to be a true "country" girl) is afraid of snakes? ::)

i hope he found his way off of the road! very cool snake. i have never seen one before.
