Around June my huntin partner Rock and I enquired a farmer about land of his where way back in the 1600's was the site of a Mohawk valley indian castle.
He was, as usual, very friendly , and directed us to where the site was and filled us in on where excavations had been done.
Over 1000 Mohawks lived on this parcel of land in 50 longhouses but in the 1650's the nice Dutch came thru the valley and massacred thousands. Very sad
Once on the right spot it was'nt long untill we began to dig cut brass ,musketballs, trade items and bits and pieces of lead.
I believe we're the first to use detectors on the site and we did uncover artifacts missed by others.
First photo is of brass arrow points, musketballs and the bottom lead piece is a carved turtle...When I dug it I didnt give it much thought , "just another piece of lead" but when I got home I looked more closely and noticed it was a carved piece !
The second and third photo is a close-up and a nickle for size comparision. He is quite small but has character !
The fourth photo is of another turtle / or salamander. I like this one
The last photo is of either a wolf or dog. The indian that carved it made a hole so it could be worn.
We were only able to search one particular area of a large site as surrounding land was planted but come spring time the site is top of the list !!
HH !
