Hello Everyone,

I went to a local convenient store to put in $20 dollars of gas in my tank. Upon pumping the gas it only would hold $19.50 dollars, so I went back in to get my change. The young clerk said “do you mind Canadian coins?” I said no and she handed me two quarter size coins and I walked out the door. After exiting the store, I looked at the coins; one was a clad quarter the other was a silver 1898 Barber quarter.

I wonder if someone raided their parents or grandparents coin collection for candy. Anyway, in the future I will be asking the clerk if she has any “Canadian” coins.

Thank you for looking.

That’s great!! I’m going to start asking if they have Canadian coins for change!!

Years ago back when the dinosaurs roamed the earth I worked at Home Depot and trained as a backup cashier, which I worked religiously as our HD was very busy. In 2 years I only found 1 silver merc. It must have been a very savy town!

I can only sit here and shake my head ! Great grab Professor.

nice find i would ask her for all my change in Canadian

Well....you don't see that every day! Further evidence that our educational system is failing our youts....

You got that right! If it wasn't for a cash register that actually spelled out the amount of change due, most clerks these days can't count back your change, so, it doesn't surprise me when they don't know what coin and currency they're dealing with.

one of our daughters(manages a Little Caesars pizza store) had heard that I had found a V nickle(a very slick toasted one) and asked to see it. As I proudly showed her the coin, she pulled out a very nice V nickle that she had found in her register and then told me that hers was better than mine. well, it was, totally better. one never knows

When I was in high school, back around 1980, one of the cashiers in the cafeteria told me she got rid of Canadian coins as fast as she could. One day, she was so upset because she gave away what she was sure was a Canadian dime, until the student came back to show her it was an 1876 Seated Liberty dime. And she was always telling me when she got silver.

In all my years of running a Litle Ceasars store, I dont ever recall seeing any silver come through, and only a few wheat cents. My one and only score came some years ago when I had to run to the grocery store to get something for my wife. The guy in front of me was trying to pay for his purchase with a bag of silver coins and the clerk wouldn't take them. I immediately gave him $10 or $15 cash for the coins which was a little bit more than their face value but about 1/10 or less of its silver value.

I found a new gas station way to hunt for old silver coins, just drive around stations and ask for old coins. Older ones could be around money is where you find it.GREAT FIND!!!!!!!!!

As one of the few token Canadians here, I think you need to send that coin back to me.........you know, to it's rightful country!! :laughing7:

That’s a Barbarian not Canadian...LOL

In the last year I've gotten more silver coins in change than I have in the last 5 years combined. Maybe some old timers are dying off and the coins they saved are getting spent by the grandkids?

Well done professor!
I think my coin star silver finds maybe a tie with my in ground silver.
Somebody is spending the old silver for sure!
Keep your eyes & ears open opportunity seems to be knocking.
