New Member in Sicily

good luck! I can't wait to see some of your finds.

Just been to the beach so far. Only finding Euro there. Now that it's cooling down I can hit some open fields. Living in an area that was the travel path between two Norman castles.

Welcome to the forums.
You certainly have history there.
Best of luck in the fields.

Welcome to the forum and good hunting !

Welcome from North Carolina, USA!

Welcome from Maryland. Man if I was you I would try looking for WWii relics. My grandfather was from Palermo.

I've had my detectors here for years but too afraid to detect, they busted a guy detecting in Notto and a hefty fine and sentence for him, unless you're friendly with some mafioso types I wouldn't try.
It was one of the reasons I came to stay in Sicily but if I'd known sooner about the hunting ban I'd have stayed in Belgium, plenty Roman stuff there.

Most of the people that get fined is because they were in a restricted area or didn't have permission. Also there isn't a ban in metal detecting anymore, that law(Mussolini era)was repealed in 2004. There are restrictions in where you can detect. No archaeological areas, protected forests or natural reserve parks, etc

And the mafia doesn't have anything to do with metal detecting, they have better things to do. Don't believe the stories about the mafia controlling metal detecting. It's just not true. I'm a member of a metal detecting organization that helps people find lost items, whether on the beach or in a field.
There is a rally on September 8 in Caltinesetta

They actually captured a guy with a lot of funds from the Notto area and found various Norman finds at his home. If this rally is taking place can you please pm me the information so I can take part. I studied Greek classics at university in Scotland which was why I came back here to live. Naxos also has information on how the mafia has collected massive hoards here. They have always been very active in the black market plus a guy was captured in New York airport with a coin from Naxos and he is facing serious penalties. These stories put me off but the f I can contribute and detect without a problem then I am more than happy to participate

So I asked my group about the event and it's been cancelled due to the heat.Screenshot_2024-08-31-13-26-34-834_com.whatsapp-edit.webp
The mafia used to control metal detecting 40+ years ago because of the antiquities but not anymore, they've moved up.

And taking coins from Italy to the US is illegal but it's a US law not an Italian law. They keep extending the ban.

Also detecting on the beach is allowed as long as it's not a reserve or archaeological site.

Look at FIDES, they are an organization in Italy advocating for metal detecting. They were hosting the event.
