From Las Vegas, New Mexico this morning. These are photos of my quick trip this week east of Carlsbad. First picture is coming down into the Land of Enchantment on Raton pass. I got as far as Roswell, Tuesday night. From there I headed to a site east of Carlsbad. After my visit there, I thought what the heck, I'm gonna go see the Carlsbad Caverns. It's quite a little hike going down 750ft along multiple switch backs. Photographs just can't depict the scope of this natural wonder. You just got to see it. After I made my way north as far as Las Vegas, New Mexico I got a room at the Old Historic Plaza Hotel. It's 30 bucks less to stay here than the Super 8 in town. The place is beautifully restored and rather cool to sleep in a place Doc Holiday would of.

I’ve never been to Nevada, but if anyone asks, “have you been to Las Vegas?”, I always say “yes”. I don’t tell them it was in NM and has WAY less neon! Thanks for posting

Well that was a nice little brake from work. Thanks for the ride along, Tam!

At one time Las Vegas, New Mexico was bigger than Albuquerque and Santa Fe. It's a very friendly town. I stopped for a bite in Artesia, New Mexico and that is not a friendly place.

New Mexico is my favorite of the states I’ve visited and the Las Vegas area my favorite in NM. The scenery is stark and just looks like a place I could explore for weeks.

The stretch between Trinidad and Las Vegas NM is surreal scenery. My favorite.

Where are the mesas I remember?

Most of the true mesa's are in Western New Mexico, west of Albuquerque on I40. Are you thinking of Wagon Mound?. Those are lava bluffs in the northern part along I25.
