NEW National Geographic special publication - "Searching for Treasure"

National Geographic has published a special editon of "Searching for Treasure". This is in magazine format and includes both land and marine treasures with lots of color pictures. Nice cover shot!

Unfortunately not too much coverage for the "average joe"
treasure hunters like us - who follow and participate in these
blog sites.... who are the backbone of
the original american spirit that treasure
hunting embodies...

but what's new... The overwhelming fact this special
edition can not deny and - by default - endorses
is the pursuit of treasure and
the adventure factor that
goes with it - is ingrained
into all of us... that
aren't dead from
the neck
up

I am glad to see they use of the word treasure. I am sick of dealing with politically correct bureacrats who insist on calling it "submerged cultural resourses"

Pirate Diver, Nice find. Can you give us a list of what was recovered from the WHYDAH ? I haven't been to the Cape in almost 30 years. Is there a museum up there with some of the finds in it? I plan on visiting a treasure hunting friend up there this summer.

Old Man: that would be a very long list, especially if we count all the lead shot! There is a museum in Provincetown at the end of Cape Cod and a tour of some of the best stuff including the bell and treasure touring the US for 5 years, currently it is in Denver.

If you get to the Newport area let me know we can have a few cold ones and maybe make a dive if you don't mind cold water.

How come your copy of the cover does not have the "THe Isabella Emerald" beneath the line The Race for Sunken Treasure. 2 different covers
Does anyone know any more information abotu the Isabella Emerald?

The Whydah museum is amazing. The location not so much. Me and the family went a few years ago. My brother in law spent all his time deflecting homos. It was pretty funny.

Birdman: if you have a chance to see the traveling show don't miss it, designed by National Geo and the group that did King Tut.

P-town is notorious for its population of freaks, that is for sure.

Another thumbs up for the traveling expo. Saw it in Cincinnatti about 4 or 5 years back. Superb. Every treasure hunter should take a look. Well worth it. I'd love to see Florida do something like that to make a few bucks for the Dept. of State, BAR coffers. Probably won't happen.

It drives the archeo nuts crazy because no treasure has been sold yet it still makes lots of money and perhaps worst of all the public loves it. If you knew the behind the scenes battles over who should have the show or even where Barry Clifford should be allowed to speak it would make your blood boil. The archeos talk about how the artifacts are not important, the information isroblem is that only the information they deem suitable should be shared with the public, hypocrites to the max.

Piratediver what if the Whydah exhibit had nothing but information posted? No one would pay to see it! Also if a shipwreck exhibit has nothing but a keelson, first futtock, planking, peppercorns, moldy shoes and rotten bits of wood who would want to see that? The archaeologists don't seem to understand. I know the archaeologists love information but the public wants to see bling. Gold bars, gold coins, 80lb. silver bars, silver coins, jewelry and emeralds. Another example; what if the King Tut exhibit had nothing but wood artifacts? You know everyone wants to see the magnificent gold mask!
Signumops, I don't think the state of Florida can monut a traveling exhibit of treasure. Its all gone! As far back as the Lawton Childs administration they have been giving out gold and silver coins as presents to visiting dignitaries. And there is very little left after the politicians looted the kitty.

Salvor6: you hit the nail on the head. The archeos are really about control and image amongst their peers, not what the public thinks. They get very jealous when dealing with high profile operations and exhibits which send the "wrong message", that is that the private sector can do wrecks without government money and stick with it longer than any university or academically oriented group can. We started on the WHYDAH in 1982 and are still going, look at ATOCHA also still producing great stuff that the public loves to see and in some cases buy ( God help us)!
