These are a couple recent purchases, quarters and halves, from ebay. I was kind of leery buying there, the few dealers I've talked to are totally against it. After examining some of their overpriced stuff, I don't feel too bad about it.
With an ebay purchase, buyer beware. Lots of coins are cleaned, although if it has good eye appeal, I really don't care as I'm not buying high-end coin anyhow. ffd

The 1855 Seated is awesome. The 1854 has been cleaned, but still excellent details. What was the ballpark price on the 1855?

I have done the same thing, my thinking is that if it has been cleaned or looks cleaned & I can get it for less than less than half of book price then OK. I also watch for those sleeper coins that no one else is bidding on. I bought a 1903s Morgan in vg for $50. & a 1885 that grades at least ms63 for $30.
I will have to take some pics of them & post them. I stay away from the dealers that will not except returns, especially if the pics they have are poor quality.

nice coins. For what its worth the capped is my favorite. :icon_thumright:

FWIW, I consider all unslabbed coins that are over 100 years old to have been cleaned at some point in it's lifetime. Some more harshly than others. Some people need to get over the hangup of whether a coin is cleaned or not. Always buy the coin and not the grade. If you are happy with the coin, that is all that matters. Sometime in the next week, I'll try and take some pictures of some coins that I bought that were part of the Tuscaloosa Coin Hoard. A gentleman was digging post-holes for a fence on his property in the 90's. Unearthed an iron safe box containing a hoard of silver and gold. The coins were sent to be professionally cleaned as they were stained with the corrosion of the iron box.

so what did you pay for the coins?
