New palce to exchange coins for cash..........

Hey people,
One of the tenants at one of the properties works at a "Money Tree" branch in town. They told me that they only charge 5% to cash in coins. That sure beats paying 8.9% at the coinstar machines! I stopped in to check, and it is true.

I just discovered last week that one of my banks (TCF) has a machine and charges 0% for members, 7.9% for non members. That's worth having an account there in itself as I gave coinstar over $20 this summer...duh.

i have opened several accounts at several different banks that have coin counters that don't charge account holders. I just can't bring myself to pay to have my coin counted. When you go through several thousands of dollars worth of halves the charges could really add up. All of my banks also have totally free checking with no minimum balance so it doesn't cost anything to have the accounts and I can keep as little as $.01 in the account to keep it open.

I am beginning to see more and more of the posts of the banks with the free coin counting machines inside. Is that fairly newer, or does it seem banks are going away from it? I am still wondering what coinstars new move for next year will bring.

I wonder if them providing direct deposit into your account will convince bankers to give up the free machines in their banks. After all to them its about getting the money into the bank so they can make from it. I hope coinstars move doesn't stop the banks.

I could care less about coinstar. Would hate to see thier action put a stop to banks adding coin counting machines. If it doesn't have an effect then perhaps I will get lucky and have a bank not too far from me get one of the machines. Then that's one bank that will certainly get an account from me.

Anyways thanks for the info Paul. Lots of peps, even some on this site are pumping those coinstars and paying out the 8%+ and we all know that if they gain stock and start getting more and more used then our free coinage days will be soon to be over.

In Vegas the only banks that have counters are Nevada State Bank and they're free for non-members too. AFAIK no others have put them in, maybe because some casinos will cash in your change, pennies and all.

Past reports on this forum have mentioned banks taking them out also.

I don't know about the banks around here, but the credit union I bank with does have a coin machine and it is free. The only thing is, they hand count halves because people have been putting Chucky Cheese tokens and apparently they go through the machine ok.

Just about all of the banks around here have counters. The bank I had before I moved has had one for at least 5 years. I once hand rolled my change jar (about $600) and they had to unroll them at the bank to put them through the counter. All that work for nothing .

I don't think that Coinstar will affect weather or not banks have counters for the simple reason that people will always bring change into the bank and it cost a lot of money to have people setting around hand counting and hand rolling coin.

I go thru over $1500 a week. I reroll them. If they took 5% it would be $75 of my money. When my bank gets one with no fees thats when i stop rerolling.
