New Philly Phinds

Got to dig up my in-law's back yard over Thanksgiving.

Two questions:

1. Any ideas how to clean up the 1904 Liberty Head nickel without totally ruining it?

2. Does anyone know anything about the 50¢ rebate token? The business name on the coin is Engel & Brunswick and I dug it up from a house that was built in the late 1700s north of Philadelphia. I've done some research and I think it was from a company owned by Jacob M. Engel and his father-in-law Raphael Brunswick. But I have no idea what this company did, when these tokens were made, what they're for, etc.










Any help appreciated! This was a fun dig!

The V nickel is in great shape

Nickel is a pretty hard material. I would pick away the dirt with a wooden toothpick. Then a light brushing with a soft bristle toothbrush. That should leave it clean without causing scratches.

Nice! The Engel & Brunswick token is listed in Aqua's PA Merchant Tokens book, but with no historical information. The firm advertised extensively from the late 1890s through the 1910s in the Philadelphia Inquirer newspaper, like this ad from 4 Oct 1901. Please post pics of the token on tokencatalog.com

Nice finds! I saw a post a while back about using brillo pads to clean nickels and tried it out on this one with some good results. It was barely recognizable when I found it, so I had nothing to lose really. But only do it if are ready to accept the result, good or bad.
