Got out for the day with a couple buds to scout some new land. First stop was a flop but the second field had a decent and untouched site. Picked up a bunch of dandy buttons and a few musket balls as well as a nice knee buckle.

Silver came in the form of a complete spoon with hallmarks. I'm thinking it's a local silversmith due to the lack of hallmarks so will do some research on that.

Find of the day for me is the bucket lister...colonial era trade weight...a first for me! Very happy with that and with the hunt.

Holy, that was a good field! If you found those, I?m curious what your buds found.

The trade or pan weight is Geo III/early Geo IV. Congrats

there could be other J C silversmiths out there
I havent found one yet
Romeo - PLEASE do not try and straighten on your own -
leave as is for now - I would try and find an expert to do it = especially if it proves
to be a "Coney"
my main computer crashed and im using an old 2006
right now which is only giving me addess to about 30% of sites im trying to open
which is making research hard right now but still trying - we need
to find an expert out there to verify

No worries there...it will stay as is until identified.

I think I won the day but one found a nice cannonball and the other a decent Conder token.

Wouldn't the A be for Anne? I thought usually the weights had a G for George, W for William and A for Anne

The A stands for Avoirdupois which was a unit of weight. The G is under the crown on the right side of the weight.

Got to see some fantastic finds and I learned something new today [emoji122]

Educate me Cru. What tells you that?
It's the positioning of the Verification Marks:
Sword at 12 o'c - London mark
Crown G at 3 o'c - Royal Cypher
Ewer at 6 o'c - London mark
A at 9 o'c - Averdepois - London mark

I think it's interesting you consider your 'Find of the Day' to be a bronze trade weight.

If I'd found a monogrammed, colonial silver spoon from the 18thc, I'd be doing a happy dance in the nearest stream. :laughing7:

Congrats buddy,
Dave

Nice 18th century spoon. Its not made by John Coney though. The mark is completely different from his mark. The style is also much later. It is likely that is dates from the later half of the 18th century, 1760-1780.
