Finally got permission to hunt a new site I have been dying to get on. My research shows that it was a tavern/carraige stop from 1780-1870. Then it became a trolly stop until 1930. The owner said I could "have at it when ever I want". Good thing too, it's a big spot and will take some time.

Dug a good amount of trash tonight and this was the last signal on the way back to my truck. 1839 Seated Half Dime. It was 8" down and rang up at 76-79 on the AT Pro. I have it in electrolysis because it has cement on the front/back.

Does anyone have a cleaning remedy for cement? The electrolysis is barely touching it....

Every thing I can think of Eddie will ruin the coin sorry will check it out Freddy

U sure it isnt heat or fire damaged?

Cool find, But in the picture it looks like fire damage.....But then I am looking at a picture..............HH

cement? :icon_scratch: from the pic, my guess is that it is fire damaged, in which case it's about as good as it's gonna get. great find either way!

Thanks guys!! That makes sooo much more sense. The research I have done shows that the original tavern did BURN down. It then became a carriage house for a while. I am still very new to this hobby and I really appreciate the info.

You lucky sob will prolly take me decades to find a seated ....grtz

this was the last signal on the way back to my truck. ....

Does this happen often to anybody else? This is why I never turn off my machine till I'm right next to my truck!:icon_thumright:

Oh Yes! That's Happened to me more than a few times. and like you I never turn my 'tector off till I get to me truck! Never!................HH

Nice find... Congrats :icon_thumright:

I have the same problem. Found a 1842 seated quarter and top half has cement on it. If you learn of way to clean it, let me know. Great find!!!

You go
About getting
The permission? Most don't care that u dig
Up there yard? Thanks in advance

My last two coins a 1884 v nickel and 1881 ih penny I found under old sidewalk had concrete as well. I used a mixture of water and vinegar and the concrete would come off if I let it soak. Now they look great

I simply ask if I can look for old coins and buttons with my detector. I don't "dig up" anyone's yard, that is why I am allowed to hunt. I don't leave any holes and the grass never turns yellow, they have nothing to complain about after I leave. I have a few places that allow me to come and go as I please. Showing/giving the home owner some older stuff from thier yard that I have already found, like Indian Head pennies, is a good way to hunt the site more and gets leads for new places. Simple gestures go a long way....

I asked the owner of the property if I could look and he said "Sure...whenever you want". I told him I wouldn't be a bother and he would never know I was there (Gave him my card if he wanted to get in touch.). He works alot, so I am there and gone by the time he gets home. It's not always easy door knocking around my way. I live in farm territory and the locals aren't always as friendly as this guy.

Great info!! It's not cement, it's fire damage.

Hey CW22! This was slightly concave too. I straightened it out...carefully.
