Got off to a new spot the other and did pretty well. Amongst the lead I found was a Washington arsenal three finger, a southern Gardner, and a US Gardiner exploding round, the first one I’ve ever found. From what I’ve read, these are fairly rare. Three Williams cleaner rounds were also found right near each other. Two of the bullets were wormed.

Also found a brass buckle of some type, probably horse related, a nice 1851 large cent with a punched hole for wearing, and most likely lost by a soldier because of the area it was in. The half button has me stumped. It has a star in the middle and rays around it and has an iron back. It kind of looks military but is not in my military button book. Anyone have a clue on that one? It’s a shame it’s broke in half as it seems really well made and sturdy. Maybe it got hit by a plow at some point. I did my best to find the other half with no luck.

The other coat size button is a two piece with just the back found. What’s with the half buttons?:dontknow: The little shield is brass as well and unfortunately didn’t have any writing on it at all.
Oh well, thanks for looking.

Ha! I just laid them in there quickly for the photograph. Will look much better when I fill it completely. :)

Sooo, anyone have any clues on the button? It’s got me stumped.

Congrats on the Garner explosive, that's a tight bullet. The broken button is a civilian flower/starburst pattern, probably 1820-1840, but could have been still in use during the 1860s.

very awesome finds and great display. just very cool on all accounts
