Howdy folks, very new to all this, but have read lots of great info. from your postings... very helpful. As a newbie, tried a few searches to see if anyone had already posted my questions... didn't really find anything, so, here goes...

This machine is my first metal detector, so have lots to learn (as I acquired it over the weekend)... I did buy it with a Search Coil cover, will that impact sensitivity at all?

Also, this is really strange, but worked awesome in my testing and running around my yard with it during the first day, then, that "evening", I had left it in my garage for a few hours... where the temps got down to about 49 degrees (Arizona, cold. Lol)... anyways, went out to the garage around 11 p.m. and decided to fire it up and run it around the yarrd again for the fun of it... this time, it chattered almost constantly??? During the day, it worked great in the yard only sounding off when there was a reason... I had really thought it was broken. I brought it back into the house, let it sit for a few hours, then took it back outside (around 2 a.m.) and it worked great again, only making noise where it should??? Anyone else ever had this problem? Could it be because the 9 volt battery got cold (I know, really stupid question, but I have no clue otherwise) and perhaps was not up to snuff because of the cold? Really weird. Worked great, got cold, did not work worth beans, let it warm up, worked great again (e.g. no constant noise etc).

Used to be into RF etc radios and know that at night they would behave different (range, squelch etc), could it be that these detectors work differently at night or when cold as well? Again, thanks for any and all help, I appreciate it. Also appreciate your patience with the new guy. Thanks!

P.S. Since posting this, I had two additional questions...
1.) Can I use this is water? I seem to get conflicting results when I search
2.) Is this to be used with motion only? That was the impression I had, but yet,
it seems to work fine if I just hover over the item as well? Thanks again!

coil cover is fine, just clean out sand or particulates wich may sneak in over time.coil is water proof, control box is not,so watch out when you lift coil from water(runoff from water),it may run back to box.yes, motion silent search discriminate, and all metal requires side to side motion.

I assume the cold did change tolerences in coil and or the pc board.weakening the battery output
of the battery is a good theory as well with the cold.I wonder if a little turn down of sensitivity
would work?try the same scenario and try turning down sens,I would like to know if this works(I
never used mine in that situation yet).

night time does not matter but my experience with water is that the emitted rf energy does get dispersed a little.

Welcome to the forum AZWIP. :coffee2:

Solx nys about said it all. Cold temps most likely affected the battery voltage or connection. That search coil cover is not that thick and is cheap protection for the hard use the coil will get bumping into rocks or just wear on the edges. Just carefully remove it once in awhile to clean out any black sand and it will give ya years of fun.

Yes to the statements above about the battery getting cold. Batteries last a Very long time in a uMax, but the cold does affect them. I was out with mine today in 28 degree weather and it worked fine.

The control box of the uMax should not be gotten wet. The lower pole assembly and searchcoil are submersible and will be fine. It is ok to hunt in water, just don't drop the detector or it will be toast.

The uMax may have some difficulty in wet sand at the beach, since it has a preset ground balance.

Howdy folks... ok, finally got a few to post an update... as suggested earlier, I did indeed try to reduce the sensitivity... made no difference, in All Metal Mode... but when I set to Disc. mode, it seemed to help and make a difference. Strange eh. Now, tried a few other things... when it was acting up, took it to the park, away from the house and was MUCH better, even in All Metal mode. So, "something" at night only, is impacting it in my front yard... I dunno, maybe even my flood lamps. Not sure, but seems to work perfectly otherwise... so hopefully its just something that must be running at night.

Am enjoying this though, as you never know what you are hitting on, ha ha.

Did pick up a 15 buck Cen Tech hand held "Pinpointer". For the price figured what the heck. For me at least, this was worth it. Open the box and reset the sensitivity to as high as it would go without false beeps. Seems to work fine and dandy - it has saved me time, especially in parks... when I could at least check and see if It was something needing digging (e.g. greater than 1.5 inches under) or if it was close to surface - less than an inch or so... the park I went to does not allow digging (fair enough) so I just use the pinpointer real quick like, allows me either get tyhe item, or move on (if needing to be dug). Man, sure would like to know what I am missing under the ground though... but reckon I need to obey the rules as well. Finding enough topside though. Also, anyone ever find anything simply "out in the desert" other than bullets and showgun shells, ha ha. As I live in Northeast Phoenix, have tried the desert a few times, at random, nothing worth keeping so far. Lol.

Again, great site and thanks for the helps and tips folks, I appreciate it.

weird.motion sensors to a neighbors nite time hobby???that is strange but a logical explanation is there
somewhere.it acts up all opened up with no disc???

research helps put you in place of history.a random walk in the woods gives me a surprise once in awhile but research and old maps do the trick.

welcome to the forum HH........

Mine is great. Good thing about these machines is the fact that they only have 2 knobs to play with, so you can't go wrong while playing with adjustments. I prefered disc. on nickel, and sens. on 7 or 8 to start out with. Environmental issues very well could affect things in your area, but I don't know. I have run some top-end(price) machines, and I have hunted alongside some high dollar ones with my Silver. There were days when I found more than the Explorers or Spectrums. A great machine!!

I have a couple of nitro rc trucks and the controles are alttle sluggish when the batteries are cold. After a couple of minutes they warm up and everything is fine. I have not had that problem with my detectors because i keep them inside.
