Well, thanks to this forum I got started (or... addicted) today. I went to 9 different banks in my city and only one had half dollars or eisenhower dollars. I got all 16 ikes they had (no special dates but they're still good) and all 4 rolls of halves they had. Nothing special out of the halves except one - a 1976 half that looks like proof - it's like a mirror. The only thing is that I think it's a D mintmark, but it doesn't look like a D, it looks like a blob. Any more info on this? Also, I re-rolled the other 80 coins and had 8 extra including the proof... seems the bank doesn't know how to count. :D

With my extra money I got 10 rolls of nickels on the way back. I am in the process of unwrapping them now. I plan on keeping anything pre-1970. Just got a 1947 and a 2009 D, keep the 2009 D or no? How about S mintmarks?

What should I do with any cash I have? I'm guessing my priorities should go ikes, halves, then nickels in that order. What should I look for in halves, ikes, and nickels? I know obviously anything pre-1970 in halves and anything pre-1970 in nickels, but anything else?

Thanks!

Edit: Wooo - 1943S! So awesome. :D

Priorities:

Halves
Large Dollars
Dimes
Nickels
Quarters
Small Dollars

What to look for:

Halves - pre-1971, proofs, commemorative coins
Large Dollars - Silver Dollars, Silver Ikes, Proofs, 1972 type 2 Ikes
Dimes - 1964 and before, 1982 no mintmark dime, proofs
Nickels - Pre-Jefferson (before 1938), 1950-D, 1942-1945 with a large mintmark over the Monticello, yes, you can save some of the older coins (pre-1960 is the usual cut off date) but they really aren't worth much unless they are in great shape or war nickels or the 1950-D, also proofs
Quarters - 1964 and before, proofs
Small Dollars - No edge lettering presidential dollars, wrong edge lettering Sacajawea dollars, and 1979-P type 2 Agony dollars

Nice to have you on board, I just figured I would tell you, since I happen to know that for the bi-cenntennial half dollar, they have a type-1 and a type-2. Im not sure which is which, but I know it is specific to the mint mark, and whether or not it is clear, or a blob. (the coin folder book I have for half dollars has a spot for both types..)

Good luck.

Welcome - this hobby is rather addicting but can be a lot of fun and somewhat profitable.

All the pre '71 halves are silver although the '70D (& '70S) are hard to find in circulation. And some of the '76S & '92S - present halves are silver also. The '73 Ike's are worth keeping because they are NIFC (not intended for circ.) and some of the S Ike's are silver also. There are also error dates to watch for (if you date check) like the '72D & '82 no FG half and a few different types and varieties of Ike's to look for. And I keep '09 nic's myself because they are fairly scarce in circulation and I don't find too many.

Good luck & HH

What's NIFC? And a better question - what's the best thing to do with all these nickels I don't want to keep? Re-roll and get cash back at a different bank?

NIFC is not intended for circulation, it refers to coins that were only sold to collectors, generally in smaller amounts via mint sets and rolls direct from the mint. And yes, that is usually the best thing to do though always ask if they want them rolled or loose! A lot of banks do not want you to roll coin because most businesses are the ones getting wrapped coin and so they don't like customer wrapped rolls (CWR) and the banks will just have to unroll them and put them in the sorter for you.

Here's what I'm keeping out of 10 rolls of nickels:

41 - 1
42 - 1
43s - 1
47 - 1
55d - 1
59 - 1
60d - 1
61 - 1
61d - 2
63 - 2
63d - 1
64 - 3
64d - 8
67 - 1
68s - 1
69s - 1

Pretty good, 2 silver and 2 other 40's. Is it really better to get dimes before of nickels? And large dollars before halves?

And is it better to get rolls at a time or boxes? Thanks again everyone. :)

The '42 nic's are only silver if they have a large mint mark on reverse (P or S) like the '43S you found. Also the '64 & '64D nic's have mintages of more than 1 billion each which are some of the highest minted nic's and really aren't worth keeping in circ. cond. You'll soon notice that '64 nic's are in just about every roll. But you still did very well from just a $20 search. As far as dimes or nic's - it's all just a matter of personal preference - some people don't like to date search and prefer to edge search so they search dimes. I prefer nic's myself but you'll soon figure out which you prefer most.

Here's a page that shows all the Jefferson nickel mintages:

Cool, thanks. I'll only keep pre-1960's then. Should I keep all ikes or only good dates?

People sell clad Ike's on eBay for rather suprising premiums. I've accumulated around 200 or so lately which I'm going to see if maybe I can sell for a small profit on Craigslist. I also sometimes spend them ( & halves) a few at a time at fast food restaurants. I haven't found too many Ike keepers myself and I've still never found a silver Ike yet. But I did score 4 Morgan dollars earlier this year and someone else scored 3 silver eagles just this week so those big dollar coins are worth searching. :)

I'd go for dimes before nickels, although that is mostly because I'm on a $250+ skunk streak with nickels.

As for the Ikes, unless they are silver, proofs or the 1972-type 2 (haven't found one of those yet) I just spend them. They are pretty fun coins to spend.

Speaking for myself, I collect ONLY silver.

Silver hunting is one hobby, numismatics is another. Most of what we find in circulation has little value at the present time, if it is not silver.

Seeking only silver allows me to use my cash for maximum rolling, and maximum silver investment. The more you roll, the more you will find.

Keep on Rollin' !

I got 18 rolls of dimes today and found 2 silver - 1964 and 1959 D. I bought 60 more ikes and have 76 total now. I also got a box of pennies that I am going to sort through by hand now... fun. XD

I'm already addicted to this.

I have a great method for dime boxes - the bank I get them from has rolls that are clear shrink-wrapped plastic, so I can edge check without unrolling anything. I can go through a box every 10-15 minutes depending on how many silvers are in the rolls, and the dump bank and pick up bank are a block apart. :laughing9: I just go back and forth all day with only $250 out there at a time. Scored 8 silver dimes in one box today - going to do much more tomorrow. :laughing7:

8 silver dimes out of 1 box and 2 silver out of 18 rolls - sounds like your doing good. That's 10 silver dimes out of less than a 1 1/2 boxes. That's a nice streak you got going.
