Hi STH69 - I'm in Houston so can't be much help, but you may want to try joining some of the local detecting clubs in your area. Otherwise, you can hunt parks, schools, woods, etc., but just make sure you check the rules and make sure it is legal.

You could post the button in the What Is It? forum. There are books available that some folks refer to, but I don't have the titles...
