Hey everyone, I am brand spanking new to metal detecting. My dad bought a Teknetics Delta 4000 Metal Detector and I borrowed b/c I love history and have always wanted to find something with history. I live near Houston so if there is anyone else from the area that knows some good places to go let me know. Ill be honest I don't know anything about metal detecting so any type of tips or help will be much appreciated. I hope to be able to make this a life long hobby and find some interesting stuff. Thanks in advance for any help.

Welcome to an addicting hobby! I am not in the Houston area, but when I started I was advised to read my owner's manual closely, practice in my own yard with planted coins so that I could learn to dig a plug and fill it back in properly, and then to start by hunting tot lots (playgrounds with wood chips, or sand, rocks, etc.) I did that for a good while, learning what my machine sounded like. I dug every signal at the tot lots. Later I headed to parks and on from there. If possible, I would recommend joining a detecting club in your area because you can learn so much from being around and hunting with experienced hunters. Our group just spent a day at a ghost town together. Lots of fun seeing what we all found. Good luck!

Welcome to the hobby, city parks are great to learn your detector as totlots offer a very good assortment of items to find.
Harris County "county owned" parks have prohibited detecting. Their parks signs have the precinct and county commissioners name.

City parks --which are ok to detect in, have "City Of Houston" on their Rules & Regulations signs.
