Nick, I'm from NW IN as well and just started this year. There are places as close as a couple hours from us. You just gotta do your homework and fieldwork. Lots of private ground out there with landowners that don't have the best preception of gold prospecting. You have to handle this carefully and respect the land and owners wishes. It took me a while to find a private place to work and then several trips to learn where to find the gold. Chuck Lassiters book "Midwest Gold Prospecting" is a good start. Also the Indiana Geological Survey Circular 12 "Gold and Diamonds in Indiana" will give you a great history of counties in Indiana where gold has and is still found.
