Welcome Aboard! Take a look at Sub-Forums: West Virginia for information (i.e., clubs, etc.) directly related to your state.

As far as where to detect. Wow what a question. I do many types of hunts. You can coin or relic hunt. Meteorite hunt. Prospect and nugget hunt. Not knowing your state and citys rules. I can only suggest public places where folks gather like fairgrounds, school, parks. Now old trails and farms can be a challenge, but lots of old relics can be found in old privys or trash piles. There was some battles in WV you may find some old musket balls also. Just a few ideas, good luck and post often.

Hello sm2015,

Welcome to the forum!

I would start with school yards, parks and your own property to practice and learn your machine. Do some research of old places in your area, your local library can be helpful in this regard.

Good Luck this year.

Regards,

Doc

Part of what I enjoy about this hobby is reading up on local history for the county I live in plus the surrounding counties. I use an old map site as well as google maps and the local auditor's office website. Start on your property and then see if you can hunt your relatives properties. The older the site, the older the finds. Most public lands can be hunted. Most towns have a website and many have a link to their ordinances. No one knows your area as well as you. Please take some time to familiarize yourself with the tools that are available on line and at your local library. If you ask for permission and the owner says yes, but the lot has been hunted before, hunt that site from one end to another. more than likely it may have been cherry picked in a previous hunt or hunts. A site is normally never hunted out.

Good Luck and welcome to T-Net

Thank you all for the info. I am really getting into this metal detecting. I just got back from vacation at Virginia beach and did some metal detecting there and found a nice ring that I just had appraised and it is valued at $350 and a really nice parker pocket knife that values around the $45-$85 range. I have had my metal detector for a couple of years and haven't used it much until this year.
