I'm new and was wondering whats a good metal detector to use. I'm looking in the price range of 300-600. Also is there anything else I need. Thanks.

Don't ya just love that new detectorist smell? Ahhhhhh! OK "Stang," first thing first. What do you want to do with your detector? Hunt for stuff at parks? Beaches? Desert? Are you looking for coins and jewelry? Gold Nuggets? How deep into this do you want to get? A "VLF" machine, "PI" machine? Do some Googling and a little research here on the forum and get back to us! - Terry

I was interested in coin and jewelry hunting. The deeper the better I guess. Thanks for the help.

One thing you will most definitely need (and can't be purchased) is patience. The other thing you will probably want to invest in would be a handheld pinpointer. It will help locate the target once you have a hole dug. I'm sure others will chime in about what detector to get. Whatever you decide, take the time to learn it.

I prefer a Garrett. They have several machines in your price range that will get the job done. I have a Garrett 1500 with a Garrett Pinpointer. I plan on ordering the new Garrett AT Pro in a couple weeks. ($599.00 at Kellyco) There is also a Garrett 150, a 250 and a 350. All of these machines are coin magnets. If you are new to this hobby I would start with a 250 or 350. ($200-300) Above all, do your homework, research all the forums and also their are great videos on Youtube for all the manufacturers.

Welcome to Treasurenet, best treasure site on the net.... :headbang:

What part of the country do you live in, that also helps to know..

If you just hunting land then you need a good detector and highly advise you get a good pinpointer as well. As far as detectors, that you have to decide, Minelab, Whites, Garrett and Tesoro all make good detectors.... Price will depend on how many " bells and whistles" are on the detector, and if you buy new or used.

What kind of hunting, land or water, if it includes water what kind of water, fresh or salt, it makes a difference. Do you want a screen or no screen, just don't buy one with a screen thinking "it's going to tell me when to dig and when not to dig", screen is just a electronic guess on what is there based on the electricial conductivity of the target.....

If you check the for sale forum here for used detectors, there are usually some good deals there, if you want new there are several dealers here that can give you a good deal as well as sponsors.....

Best thing is to do some research and some reading here, it will help you decide. You can buy a $200 detector and you can buy a $1500 detector, it is up to you and how much time you put in learning the detector as to what you will find and how much you enjoy what you buy...

Good luck, let us know if there is more we can help you with....

The first two that come to mind are the White's Coinmaster and the Garrett Ace 250. Both are under $250.

I would recommend starting out with a less expensive new or used detector, as you may end up selling it on eBay or craigslist with a description that looks something like: "I tried metal detecting and it just was not for me"...

Both of these detectors have fairly good resale value if you decide that golf is more your thing.

Listen to Treasure Hunter as he is knowledgeabl about which detectors to use. Read all you can about them and I suggest you start here.

http://www.tesoro.com/info/faq/generaldetecting/ This will give you a working plan for which one is right for your first one. :coffee2:

Welcome to the Forum....am new here myself. However dont know if you are looking for new or used detector......so I have an Ace 250....by Garrett that Ive been thinking of selling....I'm more getting into the prospecting...such as Gold and not really with Detectors even though Id have to upgrade to something else for nugget shooting. Anyway this 250 has very little use on it, maybe had it out 4 or 5 times and has 2 search coils....the Sniper and 6x9 Proformance. Anyway let me know if you still are looking for a detector and we can go from there...take care.

Take a look at a Tesoro Cibola or Vaquero and see if it's for you.

Get yourself a small coil for the detector as well, no matter which on you buy.

Oh yes, and spend the money on a good pinpointer like the Garrett Propointer. Its about $130, but worth every dime. Target recovery goes so much faster!
