Hi. Im new to the metal detecting world and am having a great time rediscovering history w my family. Was wondering if anyone could help me identify what this brass buttplate we found in our yard in southern IN belongs to. The curiosity of what type or age of gun its off of is killing me! Also the second brass item im wondering if it relates to the gun or not? Or what it may be. And the third item screams home made brass knuckles ( only not brass ) to me.?.....we have found a carpenters hatchet head which we believe dates back to the civil war era and we know a civil war vet once lived here. Any info would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks in advance!

The second brass item may relate to a toilet seat hinge.

Wow. You guys are fast! All sound possible to me....I love hearing what everybody sees when they look at this kind of stuff anyway. I see what youre saying about the battery cable end. Its at least very similar. And the toilet seat hinge...Probably would've been my last guess! Thanks for the info and the welcome....Id love to find out something about the butt plate....With no markings...Am I asking an impossible question? Hope not. Maybe we'll find another piece to the puzzle next time out. Thanks again.

Because nobody responded yet, my guess on the buttplate would be from a muzzleloading rifle. My guess Civil War era manufacture or older. But Im just guessing from memory it kinda looks like my old Mountain Rifle but I dont have it here to compare.

On the inside edge of that butt plate, where it turns to go down the back of the stock, the turn there is sharp. Where as seemingly all the others ive looked up are a rounded or radiused turn. Havent found one w that sharp corner yet.

I agree from several I seen doing search that the butt plate came off of a muzzleloader, here's one that is similar but not an exact match.

There are a couple of pages of old style butt plates on this website and some look a lot like your.
