Newbie- Where to begin?

Hi all,
I have been interested in relic hunting for a long time now and just discovered this awesome website. Could anyone point me in a direction of some good spots to hunt/metal detect (if that's the appropriate term) in CO? This summer I'm planning on road tripping to some abandoned (or partially abandoned) towns- on the list is Ramah, Keota, Trinchera, Model.... any others I should add/are any of those good places to hunt (again, correct me if I'm not using the right 'terms' )
I am also not very familiar with laws regarding relic hunting/metal detecting. Anything I should know/keep in mind?

Lots of good stuff to find here in Colorado. Old cabin ruins are what Iike to find and detect. You never know what you'll find out there! Good luck!
