Never seen a hat letter S before but there is interesting info coming in about it

Hi Jame, great CW hunting as usual . ok I'll be the first who asks , Company letters on top of Kepi caps are A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, and K with J taken out of the mix , is that correct ?

what the is S Company ?

It's my understanding that this letter was used in 2 ways we know of

Early dragoon with
USLD
USLA

And pre - civil war militia units with

VSM
(Volunteer state militia)

So yes there are other letters out there
So it's not particularly a company letter but a scarce hat letter
