Holy WOW! That is one SWEET looking historic Naval button mate! Huge congrats on recovering a gorgeous piece of Revolutionary War history and EYE CANDY to boot! I know nothing as to the scarcity of such a button so I can't say if it's Banner worthy? Sure is old historic and in exceptional condition. Amazingly COOL!

Previous ID's are correct. It is a Revolutionary War French navy button. They are found associated with Count Rochambeau and Admiral DeGrasse's adventures in the US most 1781-1783. They can be found in theory from Rhode Island down through South Carolina, sometimes Georgia. Notice the "spun" turrett back? Typical of French buttons of the period. The Continental Navy had a similar button but it is found in peweter. It is a bang up find! Nice job.

Turret is a better word, birdcage better describes the later ones.

Thats the second french rev button i have found, the larger one was found years earlier. i put in a blow hole button i found yesterday in the picture. gold guilt navel Turner & Dickerson also shown.
