With field availability finally showing some improvement, I've found time to get out for a couple half day hunts recently. Unfortunately, the only sites Dan and I could hit were ones we've had hunted hard in previous years, but we all know you can't get it all, especially in these huge fields. The best find of the bunch was a relatively plain but fairly early 17th century spectacle buckle. It came from a small knoll that had produced a half dozen colonial silvers, but overall the finds were hard to come by although I did recover a large piece to a small iron pot which is now cooking in the tank. Another site produced a few more targets with the most interesting being a fleur-de-lis shaped hinge with a worn maker's mark on the back. Other than that just a few buttons and other misc finds. Although the cotton and beans are being cut, it's about time for the deer hunters to start taking over which will leave few sites to hunt until the first of the year. And by then I'll hopefully have access to a couple of heavily researched sites that I've been trying to get into for some time, so hopefully permission can be secured for both.

Nice digging Bill. I’m glad to see you’re getting out. As you know that spectacle buckle is on the top of my list so I must say I’m a bit jealous of the piles you have. Cheers buddy and good luck

PS I also like that hinge. At first glance I was thinking book clasp.

Nice finds Bill!

Great Finds! I moved to Petersburg Virginia two years ago and started relic hunting. I have not been disappointed.

Nice finds Bill, especially the buckle. Consider yourself lucky-in at least half of the counties in South Carolina deer season started in mid-August and runs through January 1. :BangHead:

Congratulations on your nice buckle!

Great stuff. That soil looks like brown sugar. I bet nice and soft for digging in that particular spot at least! [emoji2]

Nice buckle Bill. From reading your book I know that is your second most favorite thing to find on a colonial site :icon_thumright:

Congrats on the early buckle and other nice finds

Great looking buckle and clasp. Liking the patina on the button and other finds. Sandy soils are your friend it seems.

Our deer season just opened on Monday, drove by one of my permissions, 9 pickups parked in the yard.-Yup detecting can wait another few weeks until the buck fever subsides in the blood of man.

great looking buckle! thats on my list. ill just keep looking at all yours in your book until i find one.

Finding a buckle like that makes it ok to go out and find nothing for weeks on end

I hear ya. Between deer season and the dreaded winter wheat that seems to get planted everywhere anymore, it's hard to find a field to hunt.

I love the buckle Bill. With your amazing book done and published, it's time to get out and do what you do best...and that's complain about hunters and winter wheat [emoji23]

Dont forget uncooperative landowners and lets throw in no till farming while were at it

That is a nice 18th C box hinge, pretty cool.

Awesome buckle Bill. Glad you are out in the fields adding to that killer collection.
