Found this beauty at a homestead that dates back to the early 18 century. Looks pewter to me but not too sure. Has anyone else found a similar one? Could it be 18th century? -Taylor

as pewter would be quite flaky by now, it most likely a bronze...bell bronze.
I do like finding bells of all types. Nice find. they are often broke as well.
Yes found "similar"

Bells are probably my favorite non-coin item to dig. Never found one like that before, at least not intact - I think I've found pieces.

As I said often broke.

Your original question "could it be 18th C. ?" If I were to venture a guess I'd say yes it "could" be , but probably a little newer, and also hard to date as have been made the same for quite some time, and still being made.

Very nice little bell. I have only found one cheap brass modern one and a bit of a broken crotal, so I definitely like yours. Thanks for the pics and GL hunting.:coffee2:

The bell is a very nice find! I found one a few years back.

Nice bell, how did it "ring up" on your machine? ha lol

Thanks everyone. It was actually found just to the side of an old path that might have used as a wagon trail around the homestead.

I've got three all larger two are brass and one is pewter yours looks brass.

Nice find, I'd guess 19th century brass castanoga bell. They came in sets of four and were the "horn" of the carriage. They were mounted between the horses and could be sounded with a rope, unlike crotal bells that were hung from the horses and never stopped ringing. Crotals could be used for goats too. If yours is indeed brass then a brass brush will make it shine.
