Nickel finds over the weekend - Edited

I had 2 boxes of nickels in the closet for a couple of weeks that I haven't had much of a chance to look through until this weekend. When I got them, I did a few rolls from each and got nothing of note (a couple of 2009s, that's it). However, I finished one box and got about 1/2 done with the second, and have 2 war nickels and my first 1939-D. The latter is quite darkly toned on the obverse, and overall I would rate it a VF-25-30 or so. I love getting 1939s on the off chance that I'll wind up with a DDR - imagine my disappointment when I look at "Monticello" and saw no doubling...and then I saw the mintmark! It is actually the first mintmarked 1939 that I've seen in the wild.

The war nickels were a '43D and a '44S, both in reasonably good condition. Other finds included a 1941-P, 1946-P, 2 1947-Ps, a 1948-D and a 1952-P, plus about 35 2009s, mostly D. Being reasonably close to Denver, I was surprised that the older nickels were so heavily weighted toward Philly, but I suppose that has to happen sometimes.

Of course today I went to the bank and while there just had to get another box of nickels, even though I haven't yet finished the one in the closet. The good news is that I took a quick look and found that none of the rolls are of new nickels, so there's a chance for some good finds.

Congrats. Took me about 14 years to pull a 39D from circulation. Not something that comes up very often.

I looked thru 2 boxes of nickels, found 4 war nickels, not much else to write home about.

I generally keep only low mintage jeffersons. Generally 1939-1949, only d,s and war nickels. all 1950 and 1951, 1952-4 d and s, 1950 philly but not d. Nothing after 1955 unless excellent condition or mint error.

what to you keep?

I keep everything pre-'56, plus the 2009s, and I look hard for errors (primarily the speared Buffalo of '05 - no luck on that one, but at least the ones I get are almost entirely made in Denver, so I've got a better chance to find one than somebody in the East). I used to keep everything pre-'60, and I've got a bunch from '56-'59 that I have to weed out of rolls and dump. Maybe I will keep them anyway, and sell them on Ebay - people will buy anything, and I can always advertise them as "more than 50 years old" without lying.

EDIT FOR NEW FINDS - I did more searching in the same batch of nickels (though a different box), and also got another $170 from the bank, and I found the following:

1936 Buffalo
1939-P (no DDR)
1942-P War Nickel
1940-D
1940-S
1941-S
1947-D
1948
1951-S
1952-D
1953
1954-D
1959 - PROOF?? It is in absolutely fantastic condition, and though both sides are a bit duller than a proof normally is, you can see that there was once a mirror shine. This is the first proof nickel that I've found.
2009-D - about 25. I now have 9 1/2 rolls.

I still have about 3/4 of a box to go through...until the next batch sometime next week.

I hear you Doc. That's the last one I need to fill the folder. But I'm determined to find it CRHing; like I've found all the others.

Doc & Thurmownator - I have yet to obtain a 1938-S, 1939-S or a 1950-D from my CRHing efforts, but I know they will come. While I haven't separated out the coins necessary for a complete set, once those keys (along with those I have so far) are obtained, then it is easy.
