I am confused and hope that someone can help me out.

I used to collect coins when I was a kid, and had one of the cheaper ?folder? style coin holders. I had every Jefferson nickel up to about 1983. I decided that I wanted to continue this collection to the current dates and bought myself a new Whitman Album for the nickels.

My confusion started when I was transferring nickels from the folder to the album and I got to the 1971 nickels. In my new albums there is a slot for 1971-S. Actually there is a slot for all of the Sacramento minted nickels from 1971 until 2000.

I thought that these S marked nickels were only available in proofs. (Maybe I?m wrong about that). If that is the case though, how would I ever be able to fill all of the slots in my album?

Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

Thanks,
Tom

Yep, they are proofs. Except for 1969 and 1970, those had S mintmarks and were not proofs.

The S mintmark is for San Francisco, not Sacramento. Sacramento has never had a mint.

Human nature dictates that the holes for those coins need to be filled but I would not recommend putting proof coins in a coin folder as they will surely be damaged.
