nickel search method

If you've done much hunting for nickels, what is your method for finding the nickel keepers?

I've been looking just at date and mint mark, but now I want to collect mint state coins (or nearly) also. I think this requires looking at monticello and the steps. Does anyone else collect keep mint nickels? Anyone have an opinion on this?

I keep any pre-1960 and 2009 nickels (2009s have low mintages), then check quick for any major errors. I've found one proof, but mint state nickels are hard to find.

I keep mint state nickels. They’re really not hard to look for. As you're Date and mint mark checking you’re already doing 99% of the work. After I search a $200 bag I generally have 6-10 nickels in pule that I then put the loop or microscope on. Usually find 0-2 worth keeping.

When I search Jefferson nickels, I sort to the following catagories:

1938-1949

War Nickels

1950-1959

Errors

Proofs

Other stuff that interests me at the moment.

I use to edge search for war nickels. After searching thousands of dates, I found I wasn’t missing any.
