Nickle error with picture.

I found this nickle crh'ing.What year is it?Its not a ww2 nickle.Has anyone ever come across one like this.What do you think its worth?

Its called a cud, pretty cool, but I don't believe its particularly valuable.

it's whatever year you want it to be lol seriously though the cud covers up the year. we will never know. We can only eliminate so many years like war nickels and newer nickels. I'd say it was worth $5-10.

It's a pretty nice cud. I'd say it's worth $10 easy, although it'd be more valuable if the date wasn't obliterated.

A cud happens when part of the die chips off the side, leaving a void, leaving a void into which the metal flows during striking, creating a raised area.

You should examine it closely for die clashes - cuds are often caused by the dies clashing together.

It is called a cud, and is a piece of metal broken off during striking, then fused to the next coin struck. Most commonly the cud is found near the rim or edge of the coin. Some cuds become common in some die strikes. The recent American New Mexico quarter has such a cud.

Cuds are relatively difficult to find when they take up as much space on the coin as your example does. I suspect a collector of error coins would pay $1-$10 additional for your coin, just to have an example of that error in their collection. Collectors who collect ONLY error coins might be a better estimator of the value of your coin than I.

Actually since it has a mintmark on the obverse, you can safely say that it was a nickel minted from 1968 onwards

An additional note:
It is called a cud "only" when it is on the edge of the coin. Otherwise it is called a "die chip".

That is a very nice example of a "cud" error and it should command at least a few extra bucks over 5 cents.
