I scored some firsts in the last few days. The day after I found the 1857 flying eagle in my last post, I found an 1858 early in the day just a few feet from where the other one had been. First time we ever got two from the same site and back to back at that, just on different days.

I had often wondered if we would ever find a good target out in the middle of nowhere in a field. I was looking for a house site that was on the 1872 map and could find no sign of it. There was no iron patch whatsoever and no pottery shards. But all of a sudden I got a good, solid 90 on the Deus II and it turned out to be an MI-530D-1A Civil War Token from 1863. As near as I could tell from the map, it was about where the house should have been. We've had quite a few we could not find. I've wondered why considering the heavy iron patches where some houses have been that were gone by 1896. I've speculated that log houses built before 1860 may have been built with wooden pegs holding the logs together and when they burnt down, there were no nails to drop into the soil. Another possibility is that the building may have been moved and turned into a shed or something.

Last but not least, we hit the site today that I called "mangled" last year. It had been fully plowed and not just no-till planted, so I wanted to see if a thoroughly hunted site getting plowed would turn up any more coins. Not really. I only got one, and it was in a patch of heavy iron (that's why I missed it last year). I just barely got a chirp on it when wiggling the loop in the iron. It squawked around 80, bouncing quite a bit because of the iron. Out came an 1858 Canadian five cent piece, a first year coin and key date. Naturally, chances are if you ever find a key date, its going to be toasted. Yep.

My brother's luck has been much better this year. He got two Indians, and 1885 and an 1874, both in awesome condition. He was working way in the back and I asked him if he had gone row by row back there last year, or did he just miss those two spots. He admitted he had not gone row by row. I keep telling him you are going to miss stuff if you don't do that.

Anyway, the 1885 is the hardest IHP date to find from the 1880s and I have only found one in 50 years of hunting. He got one last week and another today, and both are in great shape. I'm happy he is having better luck this year.
